Spent ‘N’ Gain

UNITED KINGDOM - 2016

Ambient-stable extruded flavoured snack product made from brewer’s spent grain

Delivery of fibre in an exciting, tasty and convenient form has consistently been an issue. This has led to a population which consumes far too little fibre, with all the potential associated health risks. At SustainGrain, we have developed a product which converts “waste into taste” – giving an exciting, healthy adult snack that utilises an otherwise waste by-product. Brewers’ Spent Grain is a growing waste problem, equating to an estimated 11 million tonnes per year in Europe alone. It is currently used in animal feed, and with its nutritional profile of high fibre and protein, SustainGrain has developed a manufacturing process which turns this waste into a crispy, trendy, extruded savoury snack, with the melt-in-the mouth properties of a wholegrain cracker. In addition to creating a food product from animal feed, Spent ‘N’ Gain provides an economic opportunity for the brewers, valorising this waste stream. Spent ‘N’ Gain is a healthy snack product made from Brewers’ Spent Grain, providing consumers with a good source of protein and a high level of dietary fibre. According to the latest Mintel reports, this meets the desire of 35% of consumers for an all-natural product, in an exciting, healthier, savoury snack.
